Hatch + Beer = Best Thing Ever

What do you call a thick stout that’s super-chocolaty and roasty, not to mention a little sweet, and spiked with everyone’s favorite Hatch chiles?

We call it a keg-full of paradise. Dallas’ own Deep Ellum Brewing Company calls it Hatch Chile Stout. And it’s coming to our stores for our 20th Hatch Festival, Aug. 5-18.

Every batch of the brand-new, made-for-Hatch beer gets its full Hatch flavor from a 100-pound mixture of frozen roasted mild and hot chiles directly from our grower in New Mexico. If you remember the beer from last year, forget that. Last year’s beer featured 50 lbs. of Hatch chiles in every batch.  Since 100 > 50, you’ll get more of that chile taste you love. The philosophy of the guys at Deep Ellum Brewing Co? “We figure if it’s called a Hatch chile beer, then let’s give ‘em Hatch.” Amen.

What sort of alchemy creates this magic elixir, you may ask. Props to the hopback. Most breweries add hops to the beer. But DEB Co.’s hopback system adds beer to the hops. Or in this case, beer to the Hatch.

The Hatch chiles are placed in the hopback, and the beer is pushed through it, absorbing the oils, the flavors, and the all-around Hatchiness of the chiles into the beer.

And yes. Yes, it is a good as it sounds. Trust us, you want a cold glass of this one on a hot August day. You know we can help with that.

During our Hatch Festival this year, our stores are tapping a keg of DEB Co.’s Hatch Chile Stout.

Listen up: You do not want to miss this. Because once it’s gone, it’s gone. You won’t be able to buy the beer in our stores.

Here’s the tapping schedule. Memorize it and get thee to one of these Central Markets. (We’re only tapping Hatch Chile Stout at these stores.)
