WHO: H-E-B opened the first Central Market in Austin in 1994, and the unique food emporium quickly gained popularity as a destination for everyone from novice food aficionados to expert culinary veterans. Twenty years later, Central Market continues to feed the collective culinary curiosity and to foster the community’s passion for food in all its glory.
WHAT: As part of its 20th anniversary festivities, Central Market has released a 180-page cookbook filled cover-to-cover with 121 recipes from celebrity chefs, the most dedicated Central Market shoppers, and Central Market store partners.
“Each Central Market store reflects the character of the neighborhood in which it is located,” said Stephen Butt, Senior Vice President of Central Market. ”Now we have a cookbook to celebrate and reflect the tastes of each community we have served over the past 20 years.”
The unique story accompanying each recipe will resonate with everyone from first-time foodies to professional chefs.
One of the 30-plus customer recipes included in the cookbook is from Trish Williamson, who shares her late husband’s recipe of Beef Stew with Belgian-Style Pale Ale. “He loved Central Market—the people, the products—and his interest in cooking increased and diversified because of that connection.”
In the cookbook, American pastry chef and author David Lebovitz offered his recipe for Blood Orange Floating Island, saying, “I never pass up the chance to teach at Central Market. The staff is uniformly excellent and it’s a pleasure to work with them. And I get to wander the aisles of their supermarkets, which are like no others in the world.”

To celebrate the launch of the cookbook, all CM Cooking Schools will host a “Cook the Book” class on Sept. 10th with the following menu:
- Pancetta Crisps with Goat Cheese & Figs
- Pom-Pom Citrus Salad
- Smoked Pork Tenderloin with Tangy Balsamic Sauce
- Spinach Sauté with Red Bell Peppers & Preserved Lemons
- Rustic Apple Galette with Creamy Caramel Sauce
