Gathering
Suggestions
- Provide disposable cameras to each family to capture your memories.
- Purchase pretty disposable serving dishes at a local party store
and save the clean-up time.
- Carry food in several small baskets rather than in one large
basket for easier packing and transporting.
- Prepare a momento for each guest; mount an old picture of an
ancestor inside a blank gift card, then print a favorite family
recipe on the facing page.
|
- Ask each family member to bring a favorite dish and a printed copy of the recipe, too.
- Don't forget the insect spray and sun block if your gathering is outdoors.
- Prepare the potato salad 24 hours ahead and store in the refrigerator to let the flavors develop.
To keep cold foods cold while transporting them to a family gathering, fill a 9-inch pie plate with water and freeze. Remove the ice block and place in a sealable plastic bag. Place the dish you are transporting on top and cover with plastic wrap. If the journey is less than an hour, place the ice and food in 4 or 5 heavy brown grocery bags.
If taking a green salad to a potluck supper, pack the greens loosely in a rigid container and transport in a cooler. Pack the dressing separately and toss it with the greens at the last minute.
A large pitcher of iced hibiscus mint tea is caffeine free and refreshing
for both adults and children. To keep the drink from becoming watered down,
freeze some of the tea in ice cube trays (a mint leaf in each cube is a
nice touch) and use instead of plain ice. For a Pineapple Cooler, fill tall
glasses with pineapple sherbet. Add orange soda and garnish with pineapple
slices and sprigs of mint.
